Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.

Elizabeth Stone

Being a dad of 4 awesome kids is one of the best things in my life while at the same time one of the most stressful. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. But, I do wish I was a little more prepared.

Let me give you a few things that I have learned that may help you.

Start buying diapers the day after you find out you’re pregnant.
Seriously. Babies go through diapers and wipes like a fat man goes through Oreos. Also, buy size 1 and 2, don’t buy a ton of newborn size. Pro tip: SAM’s Club usually has really good deals.

Babies are cute and gross.
They can be happy one moment then covered in spitup and poop the next. It’s gross but you’ll love them anyway.

You will love your baby just as much as you love your spouse.
Everyone always tells you about loving their kids. This child is part of your body. Saying that you “don’t love them” would be like saying you don’t love your leg. You can’t do anything but love them. And that’s OK.

If you have more kids, you’ll love them just as much but completely differently.
Same intensity, but different. Also, you’ll be amazed at how your heart’s capacity for love will expand in a moment to allow others in.

Infants do nothing of note and are loved anyway.
I learned a lot about God’s parental love from loving my kids. Infants lay there barely moving and are praised like they won the Super Bowl. That’s the way it should be.

Dads: Tag team the baby care.
Mom is exhausted but no one is expecting you to do everything. Change diapers, feed bottles, rock to sleep, play in the floor. Just do some more than you think you’re doing to give your wife a little break. This will make it easier for you in the long run.

Date nights.
These are a challenge but make sure they happen. You both need it. Take the infant if you need to. If you can, leave the baby with the grandparents, I’m sure they’d love it!

Have patience.
Tough one. This is possible. But give yourself and your spouse some grace.

Sleep when the baby sleeps.
You may have heard this before, but take it as truth like the Bible. Sleep is the commodity you won’t get much of for a while. Get it while you can.

They never tell you that you’ll have days like this.
