Sharing: A New Way To Think About Holiness

Holiness is primarily about union with God in Christ and sharing in Christ’s holiness.

Joel Scandrett

Holiness is scary because we’ve viewed it as unattainable. It’s heavy because we’ve felt that we can’t continue in holiness. It’s vague because we aren’t really sure what “holiness” looks like besides the description of God that we’ve heard.

I hate it when life sucks. I hate when bad things happen to good people. It stinks when life zigs and you were expecting a zag.

But, there’s good news. There is Joy is in the crappy situations for you.

School: 3 Things I Unlearned When I Found Grace

It’s amazing how simple and straightforward the naked gospel really is. In fact, most of my exposure to the New has involved more unlearning than learning. Once we remove the clutter from our theological closet, the gospel shines brightly again.

Andrew Farley, The Naked Gospel

The tricky thing about the true gospel is that it does not play well with others. I don’t mean the gospel gets mad and decides to take it’s ball and go home. When the true gospel shows up at the playground the bullies take off and if one of them tries to hang around the gospel makes them some uncomfortable that they choose to leave.

The day I finally gave up and accepted grace was the day my unlearning started. I wanted to receive rest and I received rest and an un-education. This journey of unlearning has been the best thing I’ve ever experienced. Let me tell you what I’ve learned.

Behavior: It’s Not About Modification, It’s Resurrection

You’re worried about permissiveness—about the way the preaching of grace seems to say it’s okay to do all kinds of terrible things as long as you just walk in afterward and take the free gift of God’s forgiveness… While you and I may be worried about seeming to give permission, Jesus apparently wasn’t. He wasn’t afraid of giving the prodigal son a kiss instead of a lecture, a party instead of probation; and he proved that by bringing in the elder brother at the end of the story and having him raise pretty much the same objections you do. He’s angry about the party. He complains that his father is lowering standards and ignoring virtue—that music, dancing, and a fattened calf are, in effect, just so many permissions to break the law. And to that, Jesus has the father say only one thing: “Cut that out! We’re not playing good boys and bad boys anymore. Your brother was dead and he’s alive again.” The name of the game from now on is resurrection, not bookkeeping.

Let’s take a breath.

There’s a lot here to chew on.

Hope is the tether/anchor to the Divine.

Fully Satisfied Manifesto

We’ve talked about hope on this blog before. But, hope is the only thing we have in the current life to keep us going.

16-20 Among men it is customary to swear by something greater than themselves. And if a statement is confirmed by an oath, that is the end of all quibbling. So in this matter, God, wishing to show beyond doubt that his plan was unchangeable, confirmed it with an oath. So that by two utterly immutable things, the word of God and the oath of God, who cannot lie, we who are refugees from this dying world might have a source of strength, and might grasp the hope that he holds out to us. This hope we hold as the utterly reliable anchor for our souls, fixed in the very certainty of God himself in Heaven, where Jesus has already entered on our behalf, having become, as we have seen, “High Priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek”.

Hebrews 6:19-20, J.B. Phillips New Testament (PHILLIPS)

Hope is the anchor that is securely fixed on God himself! Nothing can remove this hope because nothing can move God.

Seeds: How To Plant to Get the Most Fruit

Seeds produce trees. Trees produce fruit. Fruit feeds people.

Once you can get off the floor from this amazing revelation, let’s talk.

You can’t really tell what kind of tree comes from a seed. You can’t tell the amount of fruit that will come from a seed. You never know where the pollen will travel that comes from a seed.

Different: Three Things We Get Wrong about the Gospel

This is a guest post by my friend, Blaise Foret. You can learn more about him and all that he’s involved with at the end of this post.

Religion and Jesus are often confused for one another. And I don’t blame people for making this mistake because so often the most religiously minded people use the name of Jesus to justify their ideas.

But the truth is Jesus Christ and ole’ time religion are very different.
