You are not defined by what you do, but you are defined by how you do it.

Scott Silcox

When I heard this statement I was both shocked and encouraged. Shocked, because I was forced to examine how I do things that I like and dislike. Encouraged, because I had room to grow.

Another Man’s Things

10 If you’re faithful in small-scale matters, you’ll be faithful with far bigger responsibilities. If you’re crooked in small responsibilities, you’ll be no different in bigger things. 11 If you can’t even handle a small thing like money, who’s going to entrust you with spiritual riches that really matter? 12 If you don’t manage well someone else’s assets that are entrusted to you, who’s going to give over to you important spiritual and personal relationships to manage?

Luke 16:10-12, Voice

Jesus tells us to take care of other’s things better than our own if we want to have our own! I believe the key to this is not to “get stuff” but to love our neighbor as ourself.

Everything Well

Our model for our behavior in all things is Jesus. His life has set the bar that all humanity is capable of attaining.

36-37 Jesus urged them to keep it quiet, but they talked it up all the more, beside themselves with excitement. “He’s done it all and done it well. He gives hearing to the deaf, speech to the speechless.”
Mark 7:36-37, Message

He does everything well. We can do everything well.

The goal of our lives should be to live like Jesus. We should endeavor to love like Jesus. We should aim to do everything well.

How we do something should point others to Jesus.

16 You are like that illuminating light. Let your light shine everywhere you go, that you may illumine creation, so men and women everywhere may see your good actions, may see creation at its fullest, may see your devotion to Me, and may turn and praise your Father in heaven because of it.

Matthew 5:!6, VOICE

The joy of life isn’t nose-to-the-grindstone work, while there are moments of that. It’s working hard then being able to step back and look with pride at what we’ve accomplished. It’s also being with others who appreciate you.

Who You Are Is Not What You Do

I’m very prone to finding my identity in what I do.

Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Friend, Drummer, Blogger, Web Developer, IT Support Technician, etc.

No title defines who I am. Only Christ can do that.

Relax, the pressure is off. Now you can fully engage in whatever you do.

23 Whatever you do, picture Christ in the person you are doing it for; it makes such a difference when you put your heart into it.
Colossians 3:23, Mirror
