How To Celebrate Your Timely Death

Faith sees us joined in his death and alive with him in his resurrection.

Romans 6:8, Mirror

Dearly beloved,

We are gathered here today to celebrate the timely death of you. You lived a hard life, full of sin and unrest. Your life was riddled with tormenting thoughts, ceaseless self-salvation projects, and hopelessness. Luckily, you died just at the right time.

Celebrate

Really, celebrate? Absolutely.

We typically will celebrate the life of someone when they die. I’ve never been to a funeral when the minister and family celebrated the death of someone. How awkward would that be?

That being said, we should ABSOLUTELY celebrate our death. Not in a morbid sense.

So, this prompts the question: Which death are we celebrating? Our inclusion in the death of Jesus!

How To Celebrate

The first way to celebrate is sincere thankfulness. This is not just the glib, “thanks” tossed up for a meaningless gift. We should have sincere thankfulness that comes from our joy of being united with Christ!

The second way we can celebrate is to tell others. I know for me, when something awesome happens, I tell people! This should be the same for all of us.

The last way we can celebrate is to live a life of celebration. Nothing says that you’re thankful than throwing a party! Remember Jesus telling the story of the woman who looked all day and found a lost coin and then threw a party?! Our entire lives should be a celebratory party to say thanks!

Feast: How To Be Peace in War

Feasting is a form of spiritual warfare.

In the Christian/Jewish religious calendar we have more feasts than fasts. This is a good thing. I’d much rather feast than fast.

You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.

Psalm 23:5 NLT

Party or How to Make People Jealous

Church should be so full of laughter & joy that outsiders press their noses against our windows longing to get into the party.

Ray Cortese

Is church a party? Absolutely.

Church should be foremost a celebration. If angels in heaven celebrate over one soul, we should celebrate over God saving our own souls. We usually start out strong with the party! So excited over the revelation of what Christ has done for us. But, sometimes we start to lose sight of it. It starts to slip from our hands. That’s when we ask for the remembrance of the salvation joy to be restored.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Psalm 51:12 (emphasis mine)

If we are deficient or lacking in joy, we are lacking in the kingdom.

Joy is a command.

16 Always be full of joy.
17 Never stop praying.
18 Whatever happens, always be thankful. This is how God wants you to live in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ERV

Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!
Philippians 4:4 NLT

Joy is provided.

Oh! May the God of green hope fill you up with joy, fill you up with peace, so that your believing lives, filled with the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, will brim over with hope!
Romans 15:13 Message

Joy isn’t easy when we are depending on ourselves to produce it. We can’t produce joy. We choose joy. We choose to receive the joy that is outside of us. It’s source is Jesus. It’s fruit is salvation.
