Establish: How To Calm Your Mind

5 Things to Establish Today

1. You are known by God.

13-16 Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
you formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!
Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,
how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared
before I’d even lived one day.
Psalm 139:13-16 Message

2. If a situation is not good yet, it’s not over.

28 We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan.

Romans 8:28 Voice

3. You’ve been provided with every spiritual blessing.

3-6 How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He’s the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.

Ephesians 1:3-6 Mesage

4. There is nothing that can separate you from God.

38-39 I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.

Romans 8:38-39 Message

5. God loves you as you are and where you are.

6-8 Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.

Romans 5:6-8 Message

The bible is full of truths that can relate to every area and season of our lives. We must hear and believe these truths to keep our minds at peace. Believe these today to calm your mind, bring rest to your spirit, and infuse energy to your life!

Expression: How to Get the Inside Out

Jesus does not call us to do what he did, but to be as he was, permeated with love. Then the doing of what he did and said becomes the natural expression of who we are in him.

We’ve covered this topic several times on this blog. This is a favorite topic if you will.

Believe: How To Hold On When The Wind Blows

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

Amen.

This is our faith. This is our tether. This is our bedrock.

Action: How To Get a Better Deal

“Because of his boundless love, Jesus became what we are that he might make us to be what he is.”

Incarnation: How To Fit a World in a Wardrobe

Here’s a small collection of quotes about the incarnation of God. God becoming man is something to celebrate, meditate on, and cherish.

“The nativity mystery “conceived from the Holy Spirit and born from the Virgin Mary”, means, that God became human, truly human out of his own grace. The miracle of the existence of Jesus, his “climbing down of God” is: Holy Spirit and Virgin Mary! Here is a human being, the Virgin Mary, and as he comes from God, Jesus comes also from this human being. Born of the Virgin Mary means a human origin for God. Jesus Christ is not only truly God, he is human like every one of us. He is human without limitation. He is not only similar to us, he is like us.”
– Karl Barth, Dogmatics in Outline

“… without the incarnation, Christianity isn’t even a very good story, and most sadly, it means nothing. “Be nice to one another” is not a message that can give my life meaning, assure me of love beyond brokenness, and break open the dark doors of death with the key of hope.

The incarnation is an essential part of Jesus-shaped spirituality.”
– Michael Spencer, Mere Churchianity: Finding Your Way Back to Jesus-Shaped Spirituality

Create or How To Listen to the Architect

“The lost beauty of God’s good creation is what is recovered in the Incarnation.”

Brian Zahnd, Beauty Will Save the World: Rediscovering the Allure and Mystery of Christianity

We are approaching Christmas. Some will say “Yay”, others will groan. I love Christmas! Probably, because one of my primary love languages is receiving gifts. But, another reason I love the Christmas season is celebrating the incarnation of Jesus.

The incarnation of Jesus is such an incredibly huge and deep topic that I could only to hope to scratch the surface.

Intent or How To Enjoy the Journey

He rescued the 1integrity of our original 2identity and revealed that we have always been his own from the beginning, even 3before time was. This has nothing to do with anything we did to qualify or disqualify ourselves. We are not talking religious good works or karma here. Jesus unveils grace to be the 4eternal intent of God! Grace celebrates our pre-creation innocence and now declares our redeemed union with God in Christ Jesus.

(1hagios, holiness, purity, integrity kaleo, often translated, holy calling; 2kaleo means to identify by name, to surname; 3pro xronos aionos; pro, before; xronos, a specific space or portion of time, season; aionios, without beginning or end, timeless perpetuity, ages; this was before calendar time existed, before the creation of the galaxies and constellations. There exists a greater dimension to eternity than what we are capable of defining within the confines of space and time! God’s faith anticipated the exact moment of our redeemed union with him for all eternity! What happened to us in Christ is according to God’s eternal purpose (4prothesis), which he has shown in every prophetic pointer and shadow; in the Hebrew tradition the showbread (prothesis) pointed to the true bread from heaven, the authentic word that proceeded from the mouth of God, Jesus the incarnate word sustaining the life of our design. See Heb 9:2   The first tented area was called the Holy Place; the only light here came from the lamp-stand illuminating the table upon which the showbread (prosthesis) was presented, (the lamp-stand was a beautifully crafted golden chandelier portraying budding and blossoming almond branches. Remember that this is also what Jeremiah saw in Jer 1:12, when God said, ‘I am awake over my word to perform it.’ The same Hebrew word is used here, shaqad, the almond was called the ‘awake tree’, because it blossomed first, while the other trees were still in their winter sleep. The show bread pointed towards the daily sustenance of life in the flesh as the ultimate tabernacle of God, realized in the account of Jesus with the two men from Emmaus; their hearts were burning with resonance and faith while he opened the scriptures to them, and then around the table their eyes were opened to recognize him as the fulfillment of scripture, their true meal incarnated: Luke 24:27-31; Man shall not live by bread alone, but by the authentic thought of God, the Word proceeding from his mouth, the original intent, his image and likeness incarnated, revealed and redeemed in human life.)

Titus 1:2 This is the life of the ages that was anticipated for generations; the life of our original design announced by the infallible resolve of God before time or space existed. (Man’s union with God is the original thought that inspired creation. aionios, without beginning or end, timeless perpetuity, ages; xronos, a specific space or portion of time, season. This was before calendar time existed, before the creation of the galaxies and constellations. There exists a greater dimension to eternity than what we are capable of defining within the confines of space and time! God’s faith anticipated the exact moment of our redeemed union with him for all eternity!

This life was made certain before eternal time. (BBE 1949, Bible in Basic English)

2 Timothy 1:9 Mirror

Sorry for the verse and long quote but it was way too good to not share the whole thing.

I had to read it several times. I’m not sure I get all of it, but I do see what Paul was telling Timothy.

Paul is dropping some super heavy and amazing revelation on Timothy here. He’s telling Timothy that grace was the original eternal intent of God for all of us! Grace was not God’s backup plan. Grace was not the scrambling idea of God to combat sin. Grace was not the reluctant antidote to the actions in Eden. Grace was the plan!

It should put our mind at ease that God has a plan for you. The plan began a long time ago and it will continue forever!

Grace puts right was sin put wrong. Grace sets straight what sin skewed. Grace makes perfect was sin marred.

Everlasting or How to See the Face of God

Come with me
Where chains will never bind you
(Oh, I’m ready, Fantine.)
All your grief
At last, at last behind you
Lord in Heaven
Look down on him in mercy.

Forgive me all my trespasses
And take me to your glory.

Take my hand
I’ll lead you to salvation
Take my love
For love is everlasting
And remember
The truth that once was spoken
To love another person
Is to see the face of God.

Les Misérables

There is a lot that been happening leading up to this line in the song at the end of Les Misérables. I’ll let you catch up.

I absolutely love this scene and song.  This portion of the song is between Fantine and Jean Valjean.

This last line “to love another person is to see the face of God” is a beautiful sentiment. I believe it comes from what John teaches us.

No man has at any time [yet] seen God. But if we love one another, God abides (lives and remains) in us and His love (that love which is essentially His) is brought to completion (to its full maturity, runs its full course, is perfected) in us!

1 John 4:12 AMP

If we really want to see God we must love one another. Not the trite sayings of love, but the real thing. We must love and be loved. Love is a two-way street.

Comprehend | BobbyShirley.com

Comprehend or How to Receive a Wild Kind of Love

I could more easily contain Niagara Falls in a tea cup that I can comprehend the wild, uncontainable love of God.

Brennan Manning

I love this description of God’s love. The mental picture I get is someone whose actions are erratic almost to the point of chaos. But still has the presence of mind to be completely focused. That to me is how much God is in love with us. Erratic focus. Let’s take a little closer look a couple of terms.

Wild

A definition of wild is “uncontrolled or unrestrained, especially in pursuit of pleasure“. That pretty much speaks for itself. We are God’s pleasure. It’s true. Check this out.

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, the Holy One, to receive the glory, the honor, and the power, for you created all things, and because of your desire they existed, and were created!”
Revelation 4:11 WEB

It’s because He desired us that He created us. The ultimate picture of His desire and love for us is the act of sending Jesus. Jesus came to show us the Father and what He showed us was love. Love for the individual and love for the world.

Uncontainable

The definition of uncontainable is “unrestricted or not able to be contained“. Think of that in context. His love is unrestrictable and not able to be contained. You can’t close doors or build walls to keep his love out. You can’t build a box or try to throw a net over it to contain it.

This is my conviction, no threat whether it be in death or life; be it angelic beings, demon powers or political principalities, nothing known to us at this time, or even in the unknown future; no dimension of any calculation in time or space, nor any device yet to be invented, has what it takes to separate us from the love of God demonstrated in Christ. Jesus is our ultimate authority.

Romans 8:38-39 Mirror

Nothing can contain it nor stop it. Nothing can hinder it nor delay it. Nothing can control not contain it.

Application

You may be thinking, “Ok, so now what?” Well, that’s a good and honest question. I put together this list to give you 4 steps to receive God’s love. Please keep in mind that I do not think we will ever comprehend God’s love. But I do think we can do a better job of grasping at it and displaying it to others.

4 ways to receive the love of God:

1. Renew your mind.
We must rework the way our mind thinks about His love.

2. Renew your speech.
We have to change the way we talk about His love.

3. Renew your actions.
We have to change our actions to begin to reflect our growing belief of His love.

4. Renew your life.
We must give permission to ourselves to live like we believe God loves us.

GOODNESS | BobbyShirley.com

Goodness or How to Turn the Tables on Bad Stuff

God is so good at turning the negatives into positives that people have created theologies that say that God sent the negatives in the first place.

Steve Backlund

I absolutely love this quote from Mr. Backlund. I don’t know of a better way to say what he said.

But What About Bad Stuff?

Bad stuff. It happens.

Jesus even talked to us about the bad stuff that happens in our lives.

I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace andconfidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]

John 16:33 Amplified

Make sure you note that Jesus is not ignorant of troubles in this life, but He offers the truth of triumph! The truth of triumph is not a distant hope, though there is the hope of perfected triumph. We have this truth for here and now. He HAS overcome.

But What About Sickness?

This is a big question. Does God send sickness?

Walking down the street, Jesus saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked, “Rabbi, who sinned: this man or his parents, causing him to be born blind?”

Jesus said, “You’re asking the wrong question. You’re looking for someone to blame. There is no such cause-effect here. Look instead for what God can do. We need to be energetically at work for the One who sent me here, working while the sun shines. When night falls, the workday is over. For as long as I am in the world, there is plenty of light. I am the world’s Light.”

John 9:1-3 Message

This is so easy to read and miss a major paradigm shift for the culture of the day. Most people believed that illness was the direct consequence of sin. However, Jesus shifted this concept of understanding in the people of that day by healing a blind man who had been sick since birth. He declared this sickness was not related to the blind man or his father, but was for His Glory. This shifted the paradigm of punishment related to sin.

Jesus shows us that God doesn’t send sickness, He heals the sick.

But What About Death?

Death. The ultimate “bad” thing.

It was a really bad day for those who followed Jesus on the day of his death. It was really bad for everything, but for now let’s focus on the disciples. Some were there, some were hiding,  but all knew.

Devastating loss. Shock. Confusion. Fear.

Imagine the relief, awe, and astonishment they felt when he was resurrected! Paul would later let us know that not only did Jesus overcome death but he gave us the victory as well!

Death swallowed by triumphant Life!
Who got the last word, oh, Death?
Oh, Death, who’s afraid of you now?
It was sin that made death so frightening and law-code guilt that gave sin its leverage, its destructive power. But now in a single victorious stroke of Life, all three—sin, guilt, death—are gone, the gift of our Master, Jesus Christ. Thank God!

1 Corinthians 15:55-57 Message

So, look at the instance of death. God used the death of His Son to rescue all mankind and give us the same power!

But What Do We Do Now?

Now comes the tricky part. We must rest in and resolve ourselves to God’s goodness. We have to stop thinking of God’s goodness as an aspect of His nature instead of the totality of His nature.

As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing. You’re at least decent to your own children. So don’t you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better?

Matthew 7:11 Message

Like David, we must remind ourselves that God is good. Especially, when bad stuff happens. Like Paul, we must remind ourselves that all things work together for good for us. Especially, when bad stuff happens.

God is good. He does good. He wants good for us. He works good for us.
