Success: How To Have a Joy-Filled Life

Jesus is not impressed by our success in anything other than love.

– Shawn Bolz

What does success look like in the kingdom of God? Loving God.
What does succeeding feel like in the kingdom of God? Loving others.
What does a successful life in the kingdom of God contain? Love.

It’s love front to back.

Instrument: How To Make Opposites Attract

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

Prayer of St. Francis

Amen.

Harvest: How To Have Great Joy

Great is the joy of harvest.

Happy are the reapers who fill their arms with the liberality of heaven. The Psalmist tells us that the harvest is the crowning of the year. Surely these crowning mercies call for crowning thanksgiving!

Charles Spurgeon, Morning and Evening

Today, I leave for an outreach in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. I am super excited about this. The Rock Family Worship Center, the Huntsville Dream Center, The Ramp and more will be represented. Since I first heard about his event last year, I’ve been interested in going. Please check out this video below from last year’s outreach.

Please keep everyone who will be going in your prayers for strength, safety, and a great harvest.

Expression: How to Get the Inside Out

Jesus does not call us to do what he did, but to be as he was, permeated with love. Then the doing of what he did and said becomes the natural expression of who we are in him.

– Dallas Willard, A Divine Conspiracy

Love.

We’ve covered this topic several times on this blog. This is a favorite topic if you will.

Action: How To Get a Better Deal

“Because of his boundless love, Jesus became what we are that he might make us to be what he is.”
-Irenaeus

Why did Jesus come? What made the Creator come to His creation? What caused the All Powerful to become helpless? Love in action is all that matters.

Wrapped: How To Go Cross Eyed

“Being disguised under the disfigurement of an ugly crucifixion and death, Christ upon the cross is paradoxically the clearest revelation of who God is.”
– Hans Urs von Balthasar

Love wrapped in hate.

Beauty wrapped in ugliness.

Healing wrapped in pain.

Joy wrapped in sorrow.

Hope wrapped in despair.

Peace wrapped in discord.

Salvation wrapped in destruction.

Risk or How To Stick Your Neck Out

“Craving clarity, we attempt to eliminate the risk of trusting God. Fear of the unknown path stretching ahead of us destroys childlike trust in the Father’s active goodness and unrestricted love.”
– Brennan Manning, Ruthless Trust: The Ragamuffins Guide to God

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve had this phrase running through my mind, “The risk of trust.”

Why is it so hard for us to trust? I’ve been thinking about this in regards to God’s unconditional love.

Vacancy or How To Get the Best Room in the House

The giving up of God’s self in order not to give up on humanity…the arms of the crucified are open—a sign of a space in God’s self and an invitation for the enemy to come in.
Miroslav Volf

Our Saviour was brought into the world  to the sounds of animals. He was shut out of the world of people.

No room.

But, at His death, with His arms outstretched, He invited the whole world into Himself. He had plenty of room for all of His creation to live in.

Vacancy.

Whosoever will.

All are welcome to the table of Grace.

So spacious is he, so roomy, that everything of God finds its proper place in him without crowding.

Spill or How To Make The Messiest Mess You Can

There are some amazing things that take place when you recognize your union with Christ. You begin to notice that love comes when you least expect it, and flows to the most unlikely of suspects. Instead of throwing insults, you find yourself throwing hugs.

Benjamin Dunn, The Happy Gospel

Lord, knows this is something that needs to work deeper in me. Love that overflows. Love that oozes. Love that spills out.

Jesus was the ultimate pro at being love to those He encountered. It’s easy to think that it was because He was “Jesus”. I think that’s a cop-out. I think He was so successful at loving people because He didn’t have to try. I think it was because He was just being Himself. He was just as real and true to himself with the prostitute and leper as He was with the pharisee and self-righteous.

Dear friends, let’s love each other, because love is from God, and everyone who loves is born from God and knows God. The person who doesn’t love does not know God, because God is love. This is how the love of God is revealed to us: God has sent his only Son into the world so that we can live through him. This is love: it is not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son as the sacrifice that deals with our sins.
1 John 4:7-10 CEB

I want to share a love that comes from connection, not just choice.
I want to express a love that comes from depth, and not just proximity.
I want to give a love that comes from desire, not just duty.

Tie or How To Find The Cure for Distractions

O, to grace how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.

– Robert Robinson

There are times that it’s easy to drift or not feel as close to God. It’s happened to me. I think it happens to most people if we are being honest.

It’s important to understand that we are one with Christ. Period. This truth is a brain exercise to maintain to keep in the front of your mental activities.

Our “bent” is to wander. We get distracted. It happens. But, no matter the state we find ourselves in the truth remains, that we are filled with Christ.

For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

Colossians 2:9-10

It’s His goodness that keeps us. It’s His goodness that allows us to wander and then gently draws us back. It’s His goodness that tells us that no matter our doubts and fears He is still here. He has chosen to tie Himself to us.
