What do you do when Jesus wrecks your theology?

Has this ever happened to you? You’ve managed to set up a sterile environment of theology for Jesus to live in. Pristine. Then, out of nowhere, a tidal wave of ideas crash over the retaining wall you setup.

Ruined.

All of it.

Your perfect pH balance, your beautiful deck furniture, and most of all your pride.

This is not an uncommon occurrence. It happened in scripture.

Just before the most popular scripture verses ever comes a conversation. The conversation is between Jesus and Nicodemus. It all goes down in John 3. Here’s just a glimpse.

Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?”

Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things?

Read the whole passage linked above. I’ll wait.

What you see here is that Jesus uses the grid or thought pattern that Nicodemus already had to destroy his grid or thought pattern. This has happened to me. I hope it happens to you. Jesus only wrecks your theology to help you understand Him better.

I once heard someone say, “It’s ok to dismantle your theology. Theology is “God thoughts”. If you dismantle them only what is true about God will remain.”

So, go ahead, allow God to mess up your pretty little pool. He’ll only make it better, cleaner, and truer.
